Dayenu: It Would Have Been Enough!

A couple of weekends ago we celebrated Passover and Easter. During our Seder, we recited this prayer called Dayenu. This song tells of God’s faithfulness. After each proclamation in the prayer, we shout ‘Dayenu’ which means it would have been enough (sufficient). I think this prayer has great meaning for Christians as well as Jews.

Enough2 Corinthians 12:9 tells us, “His grace is sufficient for us”. Although we did not experience the same trials as the Hebrews, we also have trials which we must face. But we know that His grace is always sufficient for us. We may not have experienced being released from Egyptian slavery; however, we can say we were freed from something. Dayenu! How many of you can say He spared you or a family member from certain death? Then shout Dayenu. Did you have food today? Maybe not manna, but something. Then shout Dayenu.

Take a moment to read this prayer and meditate on it. When you began to look back over your life and see all that God has brought you through, shout Dayenu (It Would Have Been Enough).

If He had brought us out from Egypt, (Exodus 13:14) and had not carried out judgments against them.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had carried out judgments against them (Exodus 3:19-20), and not against their idols.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had destroyed their idols, and had not smitten their first-born.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had smitten their first-born, (Exodus 11) and had not given us their wealth.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had given us their wealth, and had not split the sea for us.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had split the sea for us, (Exodus 14:21) and had not taken us through it on dry land.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had taken us through the sea on dry land, and had not drowned our oppressors in it.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had drowned our oppressors in it, (Exodus 14:26-28) and had not supplied our needs in the desert for forty years.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had supplied our needs in the desert for forty years, and had not fed us with manna.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had fed us with manna, (Deuteronomy 8:16) and had not given us the Sabbath.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had given us the Sabbath, and had not brought us before Mount Sinai.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had brought us before Mount Sinai, and had not given us the Torah.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

If He had given us the Torah, (Exodus 20)and had not brought us into the land of Israel.
Dayenu, it would have been sufficient!

God blessed us and provided all of these blessings for our ancestors. He gave us Messiah, forgiveness for sin, abundant life, and so much more.  He is El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One, the God of more than Enough. DAYENU!
